Cuenca's Airport Just Got a Lot More Pet-Friendly

If you've ever landed in Cuenca with a dog and immediately wondered "where can my pet go?" — the airport just solved that problem.
What's New
A dedicated Pet Relief area opened on April 28 at Cuenca's Mariscal Lamar airport. It's located on the exterior of the building, right next to the passenger arrivals door.
The space is compact — about 3 by 3 meters — but it's purpose-built with everything a traveling pet needs:
- Synthetic grass with drainage underneath
- A hose with soap for quick baths
- Water bowl and paper dispensers
- Bags for cleanup
- Three leash hooks so you can secure your pet while you handle luggage
There's also an information board featuring local pet adoption organizations — a nice touch.
The Backstory
José Luis Aguilar, the executive director of the Corporación Aeroportuaria de Cuenca, said what most pet owners already knew: "Nos hacía falta un área para que las mascotas puedan esperar un momento" — we needed an area where pets can wait for a moment.
The project took about a month and a half to build and cost approximately $9,000.
Why This Matters
Cuenca's airport is small, and pet-traveling expats have long dealt with the awkward reality of having nowhere appropriate for their animals before or after a flight. It's not a luxury pet lounge — it's a practical 9-square-meter space that fills a real gap.
If you're flying with a pet, it's right there as you exit arrivals. Hard to miss.
