Happening now and in the next few days.
Cuenca celebrates its 469th founding anniversary on April 12, with festivities running all month. Expect serenades with fireworks, student parades, concerts, art festivals, and civic events. Last year's celebrations generated over $31 million in economic activity.
Retrospective exhibition celebrating Cuencano painter Virgilio Quinde. Hosted in the Casa de la Cultura's main salon with free public admission through the end of April. Good rainy-afternoon cultural stop near Parque de la Madre.
Photography exhibition documenting Ecuadorian mountain and trail landscapes. Free entry, runs through month-end. Pairs well with the Virgilio Quinde show upstairs if you're already stopping in.
Contemporary music evening featuring works by Ecuadorian composers Mesías Maiguashca, José Rafael Subía, Juan Campoverde, and Julián Quintero. Programmed by the Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca. For adventurous listeners — this is modern, not romantic.

Monthly meet-and-greet for new expats in Cuenca, hosted by Cuenca Expat Assist. Special $7 menu: chicken or beef tacos with rice and beans, or a turkey sandwich. Runs noon to 2 PM. Easiest way to meet people if you just arrived.
Cuenca's most beloved religious-and-sweet festival. The seven-day Septenario starts Thursday June 4 with nightly Eucharistic processions, fireworks castillos, and roughly 100 stands selling traditional dulces — roscas, suspiros, alfajores, cocadas, quesadillas — around Parque Calderón. Expect street closures in El Centro all week. Around 100,000 people attended in 2025.
Annual Andean solstice celebration honoring Inti (the Sun). Pumapungo hosts ceremonies, traditional dance, music, and the pampamesa communal meal. A more accessible in-town alternative to the larger Ingapirca festival 80 km north. Indigenous groups from across the southern Sierra participate.
