Cuenca Included In Orange Alert As El Niño Conditions Advance

Cuenca is included in Ecuador's new orange alert for El Niño conditions.

What Changed

The national emergency committee moved Ecuador from yellow to orange alert after a review of meteorological conditions tied to El Niño.

The measure covers 17 provinces, 143 cantons, and 491 parishes.

In Azuay, the included cantons are Camilo Ponce Enríquez, Cuenca, Girón, Nabón, Oña, Pucará, and Santa Isabel.

What The Alert Means

The national government says the decision follows analysis by the regional El Niño monitoring committee. A separate update said El Niño has moved from observation phase to active phase.

Authorities also approved a national action plan, ordered monitoring reports every 15 days, and announced a communication strategy to inform the public.

This does not mean heavy rain arrives immediately. The practical point is preparation.
