Cuenca’s First Monay Overpass Is Scheduled To Open September 1

The first overpass at Cuenca’s Monay interchange is scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 1. The opening will also mark the start of work on the second overpass needed to complete the interchange.

What is opening

The National Government is investing around $42 million in the project. Construction of the first overpass began in August 2025, and the structure is approximately 800 meters long.

The overpass was built on the lane originally oriented Azogues–Cuenca, but it will initially operate in the Cuenca–Azogues direction. It is expected to return to its original direction once construction of the second overpass is complete.

The structure has three traffic lanes and is described as practically ready, with surrounding work still underway and the necessary signage already in place.

What drivers should watch

The September 1 opening is only the first stage. Work on the second overpass is expected to begin as the first one enters service, so the interchange’s traffic pattern will continue to change during construction.

For residents, the useful detail is the initial direction of travel: the new structure will not operate in the direction implied by its original construction lane. Check the local traffic arrangement before relying on a familiar route through the interchange.
