Gapal Interchange Bids Stay Open Until August 14

The next big road project on the Cuenca-Azogues corridor is moving through the bidding calendar.
Proposals for the planned Gapal interchange will be received until August 14, 2026. If the bidding schedule holds, the contractor is expected in September 2026.
What Is Planned
The reference budget is $21,029,090.54, before VAT, and the construction term is 540 days.
The distributor is planned with one elevated three-lane pass in the Azogues-Cuenca direction. In the opposite Cuenca-Azogues direction, the plan calls for a three-lane road at highway level and a two-lane central access to the roundabout for the Gapal connection.
The project also requires relocation of hydro-sanitary and electrical infrastructure in the area.
Why It Matters
The stated goal is to address mobility conflicts on the Cuenca-Azogues E35, reduce trip times, improve connectivity, and lower accident rates.
A separate inspection contract for the Gapal traffic distributor was signed on February 18, 2026, for $833,230.70, before VAT, with a 600-day term.
For people who live, commute, shop, or have medical appointments around that side of Cuenca, this is one to watch. The design is meant to solve bottlenecks, but the build itself could become a major traffic story once work begins.
