Mall del Alto Opens May 21 — Here's Everything We Know About Cuenca's $100 Million Shopping Center

The Basics
Mall del Alto — the massive shopping center that's been rising on the south side of the city — opens to the public on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 10:00 AM.
The night before, there's an official inauguration ceremony on Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 PM (doors for guests at 5:30 PM). That one's likely invite-only. The day that matters for you: May 22.
The Numbers
- $100 million in total investment
- 110,000 square meters of construction across five levels
- 140 stores plus 80 commercial islands (those kiosk-style spots in the walkways)
- Located on the Circunvalación Sur, on the Cuenca-Azogues highway
The developer is GO Corp through Inmobiliaria Piedra Huasi — the Ortiz group, same people behind Mall del Río next door.
What's Inside
This isn't just another clothing mall. The entertainment and lifestyle offerings are what set it apart:
- Bowling alley
- Electric go-karts
- Cinema
- Gym
- Financial services
- Gastronomic zones (food courts with variety)
- International and national brand stores
The Mall del Río Connection
Here's the interesting part: Mall del Alto connects to the existing Mall del Río via an elevated pedestrian walkway. Same ownership group, so they're essentially creating one massive retail campus on the south side.
If you already shop at Mall del Río, you'll now have a connected second mall with entirely different stores and entertainment options.
What This Means for You
Cuenca's retail landscape is about to change significantly. This is the largest commercial opening the city has seen in years — possibly ever.
For expats, the practical takeaways:
- More brand options — international retailers that weren't previously in Cuenca
- Entertainment — bowling and go-karts fill a gap the city has had
- Location — south side, same area as Mall del Río. If you live in Misicata, Baños, or anywhere on the autopista, this is your new neighborhood mall
- Traffic — expect the Circunvalación Sur and autopista Cuenca-Azogues corridor to be chaotic opening week
We'll update with specific store lists and opening-week details as May 21 approaches.
