Juan Luis Guerra, La Bohème, and Fito Páez — The University of Cuenca Just Dropped Its 2026 Cultural Season

The Lineup
The Universidad de Cuenca just announced its full 2026 cultural season at the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz. Nine events spanning May through December, put together by the university's Dirección de Cultura in coordination with the Fundación Municipal Turismo para Cuenca.
Here's the complete calendar:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 7–9 | Juan Luis Guerra Sinfónico |
| May 15 | Jóvenes Solistas |
| June 1 | Pedro y el Lobo |
| June 19–20 | Música de Películas |
| July 16–17 | El Amor Brujo |
| October 1 | Desplegar |
| October 22–24 | La Bohème (Puccini) |
| November 26–28 | Tributo Sinfónico Coral a Fito Páez |
| December 18–19 | El Mesías (Handel) |
The Headliners
Juan Luis Guerra Sinfónico (May 7–9) is the one everyone's going to be talking about. The Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca performing symphonic arrangements of the Dominican legend's catalog — "Burbujas de Amor," "La Bilirrubina," the works. Three nights only.
La Bohème (October 22–24) — a full Puccini opera production. If you've never seen opera live, this is your chance. And at Cuenca prices, not Met prices.
Tributo Sinfónico Coral a Fito Páez (November 26–28) — Argentine rock icon gets the symphonic treatment with the full orchestra and Coro Polifónico.
Who's Performing
All shows feature the university's own ensembles:
- Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca
- Coro Polifónico de la Universidad de Cuenca
- Compañía de Danza de la Universidad de Cuenca
What This Means for You
This is genuinely one of the best things about living in Cuenca. A full cultural season — symphony, opera, dance, choral performances — at a university theater, in a UNESCO World Heritage city, at prices that would be a rounding error in any major US or European city.
The first show is May 7 — barely a week after the holiday weekend. If you want to see Juan Luis Guerra Sinfónico, don't wait. These tend to sell out.
We'll update with ticket prices and purchasing details as they become available.
