Casa de la Cultura Theater Will Stay Closed Until July 31

Cuenca's Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura is closed through July 31, 2026 for emergency repairs to its stage. The institution expects the theater to reopen on August 1.
What is happening
The repair involves replacing 90 square meters of the stage's wooden flooring. The work began on July 20, is expected to take 11 days, and has a reported cost of USD 5,000.
The intervention followed a technical inspection after the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra concert on July 17. The institution said the affected flooring showed cracks and splintering associated with daily use, material age, and the loads carried during events.
What changes for the cultural calendar
The theater is one of Cuenca's major performing-arts venues, with capacity for 1,200 people. During the closure, some programmed activities have been rescheduled and some have moved to Teatro Sucre with municipal culture support.
The current work is described as a targeted repair, not a structural intervention. The Casa de la Cultura is also pursuing a larger, two-stage rehabilitation project for the building, which it says would require investment above USD 10 million.
The practical takeaway
If you are headed to a Casa de la Cultura event before August, confirm its location before leaving. The schedule is still active, but not every performance will be in the theater while the stage work is underway.
