Cuenca Is Adding 20 More Intelligent Bus Stops

Cuenca is installing 20 new intelligent bus stops in areas with heavy passenger traffic, according to an August 11 report by El Mercurio. The project is being carried out by the city’s Dirección de Gestión de Movilidad (DGM) in coordination with EMOV EP.

Once the new structures are added to the intelligent stops already operating in the city, Cuenca is expected to have more than 30 technology-equipped waiting spaces.

What the new stops include

The newer structures are described as wider and more robust than the first generation of intelligent stops. They include:

• Covered waiting areas
• Panels with information about the transportation system and routes serving each sector
• Security cameras connected to the municipal monitoring system

That combination matters for residents who depend on buses for errands, appointments, and daily commuting. The project is intended to improve comfort and security while passengers wait for their units.

Where work is already visible

The report identifies installations near Colegio Manuela Garaicoa de Calderón, the parish center of El Valle, the Unidad Educativa Ciudad de Cuenca, Parque de la Madre, the Unidad Educativa Teresa Valsé area, and Mall del Río.

The DGM says the 20 stops are still being implemented and are expected to be installed over the next two to three months. That makes the project a rollout rather than a finished citywide system.

The coverage question

Residents quoted in the report welcomed the new infrastructure but asked for it to reach more areas, including places where existing stops lack shelter or clear signage. Rural coverage is also still an open question.

For expats, the useful takeaway is simple: if one of these stops is on your regular route, expect a more substantial shelter and more route information as the work progresses. Do not assume that every stop in Cuenca is being upgraded at the same time.
