Three Cuenca-Coast Roads Are Closed After Heavy Rain

Heavy rain is disrupting travel between Cuenca and the Coast.
Three roads connecting Cuenca with El Oro and Guayas are closed after recent rainfall and large landslides.
Closed Routes
The closed routes are:
- Cuenca-Giron-Pasaje
- Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme
- Zhud-Cochancay
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has shared images of major landslides, and machinery is being sent to clear the roadways.
Chaucha Bridge Damage
In Chaucha, the bridge in the La Iberia community has also been affected by recent heavy rain.
That bridge is described locally as the main connection between Chaucha and nearby Coast communities. Azuay risk-management representatives inspected the structure to evaluate interventions and avoid a collapse.
Rain has been expected in western Azuay, including areas such as Cajas, Chaucha, Molleturo and Ponce Enriquez.
What This Means For Expats
If you are planning to drive from Cuenca toward the Coast, check road status before leaving. Do not assume your usual route is open just because the weather looks calm in the city.
For airport trips to Guayaquil, beach weekends, freight pickups or visitors driving in from the Coast, this is a day to confirm routes and have a backup plan.
