Día del Libro in Cuenca Today — Book Donations, a River Literary Route, and a Novel Launch Tonight

Why Today
April 23 is International Book Day — the anniversary of the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare, and the day much of the Spanish-speaking world celebrates reading. Cuenca is leaning into it hard this year, with three events worth your afternoon and evening.
1. Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana Núcleo del Azuay — All Day
Today, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana Núcleo del Azuay, near the Teatro Casa de la Cultura in El Centro.
The lobby hosts "donaciones de libros del fondo editorial institucional" — book donations from the institution's own catalog — plus personalized literary guidance and author book signings.
If you've been in Cuenca a while and never picked up local Azuay literature, this is the low-friction way in. Free. Drop in on your lunch break and walk out with a book.
2. "Entre la tinta y el río" — Literary Route Along the Tomebamba
Today, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
Start: the "César Dávila Andrade" staircase (named for one of Cuenca's most celebrated 20th-century poets). End: Casa Rivera.
The route follows the Tomebamba River through El Centro and connects "espacios de trueque literario" — literary exchange spaces — with QR codes posted at stations along the way.
Bring a book. Trade it for a book. Walk the river. It's a slow, good-weather afternoon if you have the time to spare.
3. Karina López Launches "Iyali: mujer de tierra y fuego" — 6:00 PM Tonight
Tonight, 6:00 PM at Casa de la Lira.
Local author Karina López Pino launches her novel, Iyali: mujer de tierra y fuego. The book is written in the voice of Iyali, an Andean woman, and takes on themes the author describes as "problemáticas presentes como la pobreza en entornos rurales" — present-day issues including rural poverty.
López has called the novel "un homenaje post mortem a mi abuela, Delia Alejandrina Vásquez" — a post-mortem tribute to her grandmother. The event is part of the Día del Libro programming.
Iyali is available on Amazon if you can't make the launch.
What This Means for You
- Easiest play: drop by Casa de la Cultura Núcleo del Azuay during lunch, leave with a book and some local literary guidance.
- Best weather play: walk the "Entre la tinta y el río" route along the Tomebamba. You probably don't walk the river as often as you should.
- Evening play: Casa de la Lira at 6pm for the novel launch is a solid low-key intro to Cuenca's local literary scene. Free, culturally rich, and you'll likely meet other readers.
All three events are free or donation-based.
