Cuenca Turns 469 on April 12 — Here's What to Expect for Foundation Day

The Date
Sunday, April 12, 2026 marks the 469th anniversary of the founding of Cuenca. The city was established on April 12, 1557, by the Spanish explorer Gil Ramírez Dávalos on the site of the Cañari-Inca settlement of Tomebamba.
What Is Foundation Day?
Fundación de Cuenca is the city's most important civic holiday — think of it as Cuenca's birthday. It's a day of genuine local pride, with celebrations that span the entire Azuay province. The festivities typically begin in the days leading up to April 12 and continue through the weekend.
What to Expect
While the full official program hasn't been announced yet, Foundation Day celebrations traditionally include:
- Serenata a Cuenca — an evening of live music on the night of April 11, often in Parque Calderón or along the Tomebamba River. Thousands gather for live bands, traditional music, and fireworks at midnight
- Official civic ceremony — the mayor and city council host a formal session with awards, speeches, and recognition of notable citizens
- Parades — including school parades, military bands, and civic organizations marching through the historic center
- Cultural performances — theater, dance, and music in various venues throughout the city
- Fireworks — at midnight on April 11 going into April 12
- Street fairs and food vendors — especially around Parque Calderón and the Barranco
- Free concerts and events in parks and plazas across the city
The Official Agenda
The Alcaldía de Cuenca opened a public call for cultural organizations, businesses, and citizens to submit events for the official celebration agenda. The deadline for submissions was March 17. The finalized program should be published soon on cuenca.gob.ec.
We'll update this article once the full schedule is released.
Why Expats Love Foundation Day
Foundation Day is one of the best times to experience Cuenca's cultural identity. The city comes alive with music, food, and a collective energy that's hard to find any other time of year. It's also one of the few events that brings together virtually the entire city — rich and poor, young and old, Cuencano and expat.
Tips for enjoying it:
- Serenata night (April 11): This is the main event for most people. Head to the historic center by 8 PM, find a spot along Calle Bolívar or near Parque Calderón, and enjoy the music. Bring a jacket — April nights in Cuenca are cool
- Dress warmly: Nighttime temperatures in April hover around 10-12°C (50-54°F)
- Eat the street food: Foundation Day vendors sell roasted cuy, mote con chicharrón, empanadas, and canelazo (hot cinnamon-sugar cane spirit drink). Try the canelazo — it'll keep you warm
- Watch the fireworks from the Barranco: The river viewpoint along Calle Larga offers great views if fireworks are launched from the historic center
The Big Weekend
Between the Andrés Cepeda concert on April 11 and Foundation Day on April 12, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends in Cuenca's social calendar. If you only attend one Cuenca celebration this year, make it this one.
