Cuenca Turns 469 — Foundation Day Festival Runs April 6-29 with 100+ Events

The Biggest Party of the Spring
Mark your calendar — actually, mark your entire month. Cuenca's 469th Foundation Day celebration kicks off April 6 and runs through April 29, making it nearly a month-long festival.
The centerpiece is April 12 — the anniversary of Cuenca's Spanish founding in 1557 — which is a local holiday. That means banks, government offices, and many businesses will be closed. But the festivities extend well beyond a single day.
What We Know So Far
The municipality has announced 100+ events across the festival period. While the full schedule is still being finalized, here's what's been confirmed:
Concerts
- Andrés Cepeda — The Colombian pop/romantic star is confirmed for April 11. Venue TBA (likely Teatro Casa de la Cultura or an outdoor stage). If you know his music — "Día Tras Día," "El Mensaje" — this will be a packed show
- Devendra Banhart — The Venezuelan-American indie folk artist performs at Teatro Pumapungo on April 11. Two big concerts on the same night — plan accordingly
Parades & Public Events
- The traditional civic parade runs through El Centro on April 12, with school marching bands, municipal delegations, and cultural groups
- Food fairs featuring traditional Cuencano cuisine — expect hornado, cuy, mote pillo, and the inevitable canelazo stands
- Art exhibitions at galleries and museums citywide
- Sporting events including community runs and cycling events
Three-Day Main Celebration
The core celebration runs April 10-12, building to the big day. Expect:
- Street closures throughout El Centro
- Live music in Parque Calderón and surrounding plazas
- Fireworks on the evening of April 12
- Cultural performances at multiple venues
Semana Santa Overlap
Here's an important timing note: Semana Santa (Holy Week) runs March 29 through April 5, with Good Friday on April 3 as a national holiday. That means Cuenca essentially gets two consecutive weeks of celebrations — Holy Week wraps up on April 5, and Foundation Day kicks off on April 6.
If you have family or friends thinking about visiting, this is one of the best windows of the year. Two weeks of culture, food, and festivity back-to-back.
Practical Tips
- Book restaurants early for April 11-12 weekend — popular spots in El Centro will be packed
- Concert tickets for Cepeda and Banhart should go on sale soon — follow the Municipality of Cuenca and Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca social media for announcements
- April 12 is a local holiday — banks, government offices, and some businesses close. Stock up on groceries
- Street parking will be impossible in El Centro April 10-12. Take a taxi, use the tram, or walk
- If you're driving out of town on the April 12 long weekend, expect heavy traffic on the Cuenca-Molleturo-Guayaquil road and the Cuenca-Gualaceo road
The Full Schedule
The municipality typically publishes the complete event schedule 2-3 weeks before Foundation Day. We'll update this article when the full program drops. In the meantime, keep an eye on the GAD Municipal de Cuenca website and their social media channels.
This is Cuenca at its most festive. Don't miss it.
