Cuenca's urban buses have four surveillance cameras, the municipal mobility directorate said. Planned security buttons are intended to alert to theft, sexual harassment and other risks during bus journeys.
According to Berenice Cubides, the general director of mobility, the cameras cover the front and rear interior areas of the buses. The buttons are to be located in the driver's cabin and at the rear of the bus.
The devices are part of a public transport improvement plan approved by the Cantonal Council in December 2025 and updated in September 2026. The measures are expected to be operational around mid-2027.
The Cuenca Transport Chamber is seeking an agreement with the Azuay Governorate and the National Police for plainclothes officers to carry out checks inside buses.
The 475 urban buses carry approximately 327,000 people a day.
