Practical Tips for the Week
- Parking will be a nightmare in the centro historico from Friday through Sunday. Use the tranvía park-and-ride lots at the terminal stations (Parque Industrial or Control Sur) and ride into the center. It's 35 cents and saves you hours of circling
- Calle Bolivar will be closed multiple times for the children's parade (Saturday AM) and marching band parade (Saturday PM). Avoid it as a through-route on Saturday
- Centro historico will be packed Friday through Sunday. If you need to run errands in El Centro, do them Monday through Thursday this week
- Monday the 13th is a holiday. Banks closed. Government offices closed. Many restaurants and shops closed. Supermarkets may operate on reduced hours. Fill your fridge over the weekend
- The Santos match on Wednesday will cause traffic disruption around the stadium area from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night
- Bring cash to the artisan markets and fairs. Many small vendors don't take cards
- Sunscreen and water. April in Cuenca can be sunny despite cooler temperatures. The altitude means UV is strong even when it doesn't feel hot
- If you attend only one event, make it the Gran Feria de la Ruralidad (Friday-Sunday on Av. 12 de Abril). Seventy stands from 21 rural parishes — authentic food, crafts, and a window into Cuenca's surrounding communities that tourists never see
Happy Foundation Week, Cuenca.
