Foundation Weekend Is Here: Feria de la Ruralidad, Andrés Cepeda, Children's Parade, and the Big Day

The Big Weekend
Foundation Week has been building all week — but the main events land Friday through Monday. If you only have time for one weekend of the year to go out and experience Cuenca's culture, this is it.
Friday, April 10
- Gran Feria de la Ruralidad — Opens today and runs through Sunday. 70 artisan stands from 21 rural parishes showcasing food, crafts, and culture. 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM, Avenida 12 de Abril (Parque de la Madre area) (source). This is one of the best events of the week — authentic products from communities most tourists never visit
- Escalinata César Dávila Andrade Inauguration — 6:00 PM, Paseo 3 de Noviembre (source). A new public stairway along the river — permanent addition to the city
- Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca — Tribute to Padre Carlos Crespi. 7:30 PM, Santuario María Auxiliadora. Free (source)
- International Book Fair Opens — Runs April 10-14 with 60 writers (38 from Cuenca, 16 from Ecuador, 6 from Latin America) (source)
Saturday, April 11
- Children's Parade "Morlaquitos saludan a Cuenca" — 9:00 AM, starts at Parque San Blas, route along Calle Bolívar (source). Expect Bolívar to be closed to traffic
- Free Pet Vaccinations — 10:00 AM, Plaza El Otorongo (source). Bring your dogs and cats
- Andrés Cepeda Concert "Nuestra Vida en Canciones" — 8:00 PM, Coliseo Jefferson Pérez. Tickets $40-$120 via TicketShow (source)
- Marching Band Parade — 6:00 PM, Calle Bolívar from San Blas to Parque Calderón (source)
Sunday, April 12 — Foundation Day (469th Anniversary)
- Thanksgiving Mass — 8:00 AM, Iglesia del Sagrario (source)
- Official Civic Ceremony (Sesión Solemne) — 11:00 AM, Salón de la Ciudad (source)
- Gran Feria de la Ruralidad continues — last full day
Monday, April 13 — HOLIDAY
Most businesses, banks, and government offices will be CLOSED. This is the transferred Foundation Day holiday. Do your banking and errands before the weekend.
What This Means for You
- Centro histórico will be packed Friday through Sunday. Use the tranvía — $0.35 and no parking headaches
- Calle Bolívar closes Saturday for two parades (morning and evening). Avoid it as a through-route
- Fill your fridge over the weekend. Monday is a holiday — supermarkets may have reduced hours
- If you attend one event, make it the Gran Feria de la Ruralidad. Seventy stands, authentic rural products, and a window into Cuenca's surrounding communities
