Cuenca Turns 469 on April 12 — Month-Long Celebrations Start April 1

Mark Your Calendar
April 12, 1557 — that's when the Spanish founded Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca, making this the city's 469th birthday. And Cuenca doesn't just celebrate on the day — the entire month of April is essentially one long civic party.
Festivities officially run April 1 through April 30, with the biggest events clustered around the week of April 12.
What to Expect
The Serenata (Night of April 11)
The night before the anniversary is traditionally the Serenata a Cuenca — a massive outdoor concert in Parque Calderón (or sometimes along the Tomebamba riverfront) featuring live music that runs until midnight or later. At midnight on April 12, fireworks light up the sky over the city.
This is arguably the single best night of the year to be in Cuenca. The entire historic center fills with people, there's music everywhere, and the energy is infectious. Dress warm — April nights in Cuenca can be chilly.
Student Parades (Desfiles)
In the days around April 12, schools and universities hold parades through the city center. Students march in uniforms, bands play, dance groups perform, and floats roll through the streets. The parades are charming, chaotic, and can snarl traffic for hours — plan accordingly.
Concerts and Cultural Events
The municipality typically programs:
- Free concerts in Parque Calderón and along the riverfront
- Art exhibitions in galleries and public spaces throughout El Centro
- Theater and dance performances at venues like the Teatro Sucre and Casa de la Cultura
- Photography and painting competitions with Cuenca as the subject
- Gastronomy festivals showcasing traditional Cuencano cuisine
Other Traditions
- Civic ceremonies at the municipal government buildings
- Beauty pageant (Reina de Cuenca) — a major social event
- Sports tournaments including cycling races through the city and surrounding countryside
- Church services at the Catedral marking the city's founding
The Economic Impact
Last year's founding celebrations generated an estimated $31 million in economic activity for the city. Hotels fill up, restaurants are packed, and the city sees a major influx of domestic tourists from Guayaquil, Quito, and other cities.
This is great for the local economy but means higher prices and less availability for hotels, restaurants, and transportation during the peak week.
Get Involved
The GAD Municipal de Cuenca (city government) is currently accepting proposals for cultural events to be included in the official April programming. If you're an artist, musician, or event organizer, this is your chance to be part of the celebration.
Contact information is typically available on the municipal website or through the Dirección de Cultura office.
Practical Tips for Expats
- If you're staying: Enjoy it. April is one of the best months to be in Cuenca. The serenata on April 11 is a must-experience event
- If you're traveling: Book your return transportation early. Buses and flights to/from Cuenca fill up around April 10-13
- Traffic: Expect road closures and heavy traffic in El Centro throughout the week of April 12. Use the tram or walk if you can
- Noise: The area around Parque Calderón gets loud, especially April 11-12. If you're sensitive to noise and live in El Centro, consider earplugs or a night away
- Shopping: Some businesses close on April 12 itself, but most are open (and hoping for your business) the rest of the month
Cuenca takes its birthday seriously. After nearly five centuries, the city hasn't gotten tired of celebrating — and honestly, neither should you.
