Tonight: A 50-Year Retrospective by One of Cuenca's Most Important Artists Opens at the Modern Art Museum

Five Decades of Work, One Exhibition
Tonight marks the opening of "Parajes del Silencio" (Landscapes of Silence), a 50-year career retrospective by Cuenca artist Diego Jaramillo Paredes at the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno.
Jaramillo Paredes is one of Cuenca's most respected visual artists, with a body of work spanning five decades. A retrospective of this scope — covering an entire artistic career — doesn't happen often, and the Museo de Arte Moderno is one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in the city.

About the Museum
If you haven't visited the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno, this is a great excuse. The museum occupies a beautifully restored colonial building near the Tomebamba River in the heart of the historic center. It's one of Ecuador's premier contemporary art spaces, with rotating exhibitions alongside its permanent collection.
The building itself — with its interior courtyards and whitewashed walls — provides a contemplative setting that pairs well with the retrospective's title: Landscapes of Silence.
Getting There
The museum is on Calle Sucre between Coronel Talbot and Hermano Miguel, just a few blocks south of Parque Calderón. If you're walking from El Centro, head south on Talbot past the Tomebamba viewpoint — you'll see the museum entrance on Sucre.
By tranvía: The nearest stop is Calle Larga (~5 minute walk south on Talbot).
By taxi: From most expat neighborhoods, expect to pay $2-3. Just tell the driver "Museo de Arte Moderno, en la Sucre."
Why Go
You don't need to speak Spanish or know anything about Ecuadorian art to appreciate a career retrospective. Fifty years of an artist's evolution, hung in the rooms of a colonial museum, speaks for itself. The opening night atmosphere — wine, conversation, the artist's community turning out — is also one of the better ways to experience Cuenca's cultural side.
Tonight. 7:00 PM. Free.
