Plegarias de Mi Tierra: Free Sacred Music Festival Tonight and Tomorrow at Casa de la Cultura

The Festival
Plegarias de Mi Tierra ("Prayers of My Land") is the largest sacred music festival in Ecuador and one of the most important in Latin America. It's happening tonight (April 8) and tomorrow night (April 9) at the Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana, Núcleo del Azuay in Cuenca.
Shows start at 8:00 PM both nights. Admission is free.
What to Expect
The festival features more than 200 artists performing:
- Choral ensembles — multi-voice harmonies performing sacred works from Latin American and European traditions
- Solo vocalists — high-level performers interpreting religious and spiritual music
- Dance performances — choreography inspired by faith traditions and cultural roots
- A repertoire that spans centuries — from colonial-era sacred compositions to contemporary spiritual music rooted in Andean and Latin American identity
This is not a casual community performance. Plegarias de Mi Tierra draws serious talent and has been running for years as one of Cuenca's signature cultural events.
Venue Details
The Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura is located on Calle Luis Cordero, a couple of blocks north of Calle Larga. It's a proper theater with good acoustics and seating.
- Arrive early. Free events at good venues fill up. The doors typically open 30-45 minutes before showtime
- Dress comfortably but respectfully. This is sacred music — smart casual is appropriate
- The area is walkable from most of El Centro. If you're coming from further out, the tranvía or a taxi to Calle Larga works well
Why You Should Go
This is the kind of event that makes living in Cuenca special. You're not paying $150 for concert tickets — you're walking into a world-class musical performance for free, in a beautiful theater, during Foundation Week. The sacred music tradition in Ecuador is deep and moving, and hearing it performed live by 200+ artists in the Casa de la Cultura is an experience you won't forget.
Even if sacred music isn't normally your thing, go. The quality of the performances and the atmosphere of the evening transcend genre preferences. This is culture at the highest level, and it's happening in your city, for free.
