Tomorrow Is International Women's Day — Here's What Cuenca Has Planned

Cuenca Goes All In for March 8
International Women's Day is tomorrow, and Cuenca isn't treating it as an afterthought. The city has organized a full weekend of events — starting tonight — that range from athletic to artistic to activist. Whether you want to walk, ride, march, or just listen to live piano, there's something on the calendar.
Here's everything happening, in chronological order.
Tonight (Friday, March 7)
Health Walk
- Time: 7:30 PM
- Start: Avenida Roberto Crespo Toral
- What: An evening walk organized by city health authorities to kick off the Women's Day weekend. Expect a big turnout — these walks are popular with Cuencanas of all ages.
Tomorrow (Saturday, March 8)
Bike Ride — "Pedaleada por el Dia de la Mujer"
- Time: 8:30 AM
- Start: EMOV headquarters, Misicata
- What: A community bike ride through the city organized by EMOV (Cuenca's transit authority). Bring your own bike. The route typically follows the ciclovía along the Tomebamba.
Women's March
- Time: 9:00 AM
- Start: Puente Vivas Nos Queremos (the bridge near the Tomebamba, downstream from Puente Roto)
- What: The main march of the day. This is organized by women's rights groups and typically draws a large, energetic crowd through El Centro. Expect signs, chanting, music, and a strong police presence (for traffic, not crowd control — these are peaceful).
For expats: This is worth seeing even if you don't march. The energy is powerful, and it's a window into how seriously Cuencanas take this day. If you're near El Centro around 9-11 AM, you'll run into it.
Piano Recital
- Time: 10:00 AM
- Location: Museum of Modern Art (Calle Sucre, between Coronel Tálbot and Hermano Miguel)
- What: A special Women's Day piano recital inside one of Cuenca's most beautiful cultural spaces. Free entry. The Museum of Modern Art is housed in a restored colonial building with a stunning interior courtyard — worth the visit even without the music.
Building Illuminations
Several iconic Cuenca buildings will be lit up in purple for the evening of March 8, including landmarks around Parque Calderón. If you're out for dinner Saturday night, keep your eyes up.
Month-Long Programming Through March 31
The city isn't stopping at one weekend. Municipal authorities have announced programming running through the end of March, including workshops, talks, and cultural events focused on women's rights, health, and economic empowerment. Details on additional events are expected to be published through the Municipality of Cuenca's social media channels throughout the month.
Why This Matters in Ecuador
International Women's Day carries significant weight in Latin America, and Ecuador is no exception. Gender-based violence remains a serious issue — Ecuador has some of the highest rates of femicide in the region — and March 8 is both a celebration of women's achievements and a protest demanding better protections.
The name of the bridge where the march begins — Puente Vivas Nos Queremos ("We Want Us Alive Bridge") — tells you everything about the tone. This isn't a Hallmark holiday. It's a day with real urgency behind it.
Practical Tips
- Expect road closures in El Centro Saturday morning, especially along Calle Sucre and near the Tomebamba bridges
- Street parking will be difficult near the march route from 8:30 AM onward — take a taxi or walk
- The march is peaceful and expat-friendly — you're welcome to join or watch from the sidewalk
- Bring an umbrella — March afternoons in Cuenca can turn wet fast
