Cuenca’s Baños Hospital Could Open in the First Week of September

Cuenca’s new Municipal Hospital of Baños could begin operating in the first week of September, according to a report published by El Mercurio on August 20, 2026. The date is still tentative: the Municipality of Cuenca has not confirmed the official inauguration.
The hospital had been waiting several weeks for its operating permit from the Agency for Quality Assurance of Health Services and Prepaid Medicine, known as ACESS. The report says the facility now has what it needs to begin serving residents.
What the hospital includes
The project represents an investment of USD 7,415,330.68. It is located in Huizhil Alto, in the Baños parish, on a 5,272-square-meter site.
The three-story facility is planned to include:
- 22 beds
- Two operating rooms
- An imaging area
- An emergency area with six beds
- A neonatology unit
- 12 consultation rooms
- A pharmacy and nursing station
- Tomography equipment
How it fits into Cuenca’s municipal system
The Baños facility would be the second municipal health center opened in Cuenca this year. El Mercurio reports that the El Valle hospital opened in February, while the Hospital del Niño y la Mujer de Patamarca has operated for several years. That makes Baños the city’s third municipal hospital in the article’s description.
The practical distinction is between a facility being equipped and a facility having an announced opening. Baños appears to be at the first stage of readiness, but the public date remains tentative until the Municipality confirms it.
What this means for Cuenca expats
For residents in Baños and nearby areas, the useful item to watch is the Municipality’s official opening announcement. The report does not provide a final service schedule, patient-registration procedure, or information about fees. It also does not say which services will begin on the first day.
Until the opening is confirmed, treat the first week of September as a target rather than a guaranteed appointment date. Once the Municipality publishes the operating schedule, residents can determine whether the new hospital is relevant for routine consultations, imaging, emergency care, or referrals.
