Cuenca's New Airport Site Has Favorable Early Weather Data

Cuenca's new-airport debate has a fresh data point.
El Mercurio reports that preliminary information from two meteorological stations between Victoria del Portete and Tarqui is favorable for the proposed new airport site.
Jose Luis Aguilar, director of Corpac, told El Mercurio the first data are favorable in general terms.
What The Study Says So Far
Aguilar said Corpac still needs to collect information for 3 to 5 years and may add a third meteorological station.
He also said the current work updates earlier preliminary studies from about 10 years ago.
One major concern was fog.
El Mercurio reports that this concern was dismissed by the Canadian consultant working on the studies that will help determine conditions affecting air navigation.
What Comes Next
Aguilar said the preliminary weather data still need to be followed by other work, including:
- A pre-feasibility study
- A soil study
- Engineering designs
Cuenca Mayor Cristian Zamora also agreed that the first results support the feasibility of the area previously identified for the new terminal.
Why Expats Should Care
Cuenca's current airport is convenient, but its short runway and mountain setting are a constant part of local travel reality.
This does not mean a new airport is around the corner. It means the chosen area is still alive as a serious option, and the next studies will decide whether the idea moves from talk to a real project path.
