Cuenca Tranvia Card Sales Should Return By Mid-August

If you have tried to buy a Cuenca Tranvia card lately and come up empty, there is finally a timeline for relief. The city says a broad stock of cards should return to authorized sales points by mid-August.

That is not an exact day yet, so it is worth treating this as a target rather than a guaranteed appointment with the ticket counter. Still, it is the clearest update riders have received after several weeks of irregular card sales.

What held up the cards

Cuenca had been operating with minimal card inventory after a procurement problem interrupted normal sales. The municipal mobility coordinator said the contracting process for the Tranvia payment system had been suspended in Sercop, Ecuador's public-procurement system, because one provider did not meet a required value-added condition.

Tranvia director Haydee Lopez says a contract for the first new batch was signed about 15 days before the source report. That batch is expected to be sold in the city once it arrives.

What riders should do

If you already have a working card, keep it, protect it, and reload it rather than assuming replacements are easy to find right now. If you need a new one, ask at an authorized point before making a special trip and expect availability to improve around the middle of August.

The city has not yet stated the exact restock date, the number of cards in the first batch, or which sales point will receive inventory first. That means availability may return unevenly.

Why it matters

A payment-card shortage sounds small until you are the person trying to use the Tranvia regularly. For new arrivals, visitors staying for a longer stretch, and residents replacing a lost card, the shortage adds friction to one of Cuenca's easiest ways to move through the city.

The useful news is that the procurement blockage has moved forward and the first batch is under contract. The practical advice is simpler: hold onto the card you have, and check before heading out to buy a new one.
