Escenarios del Mundo Festival Returns to Cuenca and Azuay for 20th Edition

The International Festival of Performing Arts Escenarios del Mundo is set to celebrate its twentieth edition, bringing a vibrant array of performances to Cuenca and the wider Azuay region. From October 1 to 14, 2026, residents and visitors can experience a diverse program spanning theater, dance, oral narration, and music.

Juan Andrade, the festival's director, confirmed that activities will not be confined to Cuenca's city limits but will extend to surrounding parishes and towns, ensuring broader community access to the arts. This local focus makes the festival a significant event for those living in or near Cuenca.

Artists and companies from nine countries are slated to participate, including Ecuador, Argentina, the United States, Taiwan, Peru, Australia, Spain, Colombia, and Cuba. International highlights include “Manic Freak” from Argentina, “Lecciones de vida” from the United States, and “Montaña Hoguera” from Taiwan. Ecuadorian creations will also be prominently featured, with groups selected through an open call.

Performances will take place in well-known Cuenca venues such as Teatro Pumapungo and Parque de la Madre. Beyond traditional stages, the festival agenda includes special presentations for students and activities in rural areas, aiming to reach diverse audiences. A scenic parade involving 90 students, produced by FEDM, is also part of the festivities.

The festival's inauguration is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, at 8:00 PM at Museo Pumapungo, featuring “JoJo Hamlet, Stand up tragedy” and “Mónices de lo mono América.” Tickets for the various functions are available for purchase on the Meet2go platform. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with international and local performing arts right here in Cuenca.
