January Inflation Hits 0.37% - Here's What's Costing More at the Grocery Store

Ecuador's national statistics agency (INEC) reported 0.37% inflation for January 2026 - a notable shift from January 2025, which actually saw deflation of -0.15%.
What's Driving the Increase
The biggest price jumps were in food and beverages. Soft drinks led the way, followed by whole chicken, onions, oranges, canned tuna, cheese, cilantro, instant coffee, vegetable oil, and corn.
Personal care items also climbed - deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, haircuts, and cosmetics all cost more than last month.
The Bigger Picture
- Monthly inflation: 0.37%
- Annual inflation: 2.44%
- Basic family basket: $821.80/month
- Vital (minimum) basket: $574.24/month
What This Means for Expats in Cuenca
Your grocery bill at Supermaxi or Coral might be a few dollars higher this month. The best hedge remains shopping at Feria Libre or the 10 de Agosto market, where local produce prices stay more competitive than chain supermarkets.
For context, Ecuador's inflation remains low compared to most of Latin America and far below the US. The dollarized economy continues to provide price stability that many expat destinations can't match.
