Monay Overpass Crews Are Installing the Final Beams

The Monay interchange is entering one of its more visible construction phases: crews are installing the remaining beams for the first of the two overpasses.
That first overpass, part of the project on the Cuenca-Azogues-Biblian highway, is scheduled to enter service in September. To meet that target, the contractor is prioritizing beam placement over the next 15 days so crews can complete the superstructure and move toward asphalt work.
What Is Happening Now
RIPCONCIV Construcciones Civiles Cia. Ltda. is installing the central beams over the IESS roundabout to connect the two ramps for the Azogues-Cuenca direction. Large-capacity cranes are being used because of the weight of the structures.
Mario Vintimilla, zonal subsecretary 6 for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), said that once the central beams are placed, concrete slabs for the driving surface will be installed. That step is expected to take 40 to 45 days, followed by asphalt, finishing work and signage.
Where The Project Stands
The broader interchange is still far from finished. The project has executed around 90% of its planned walls and is more than 30% complete overall. The second overpass, for the Cuenca-Azogues direction, is not yet reflected in that progress figure.
The work requires more than $42 million in investment, began in August 2025, and is expected to conclude in 2027.
Traffic Watch
When the first overpass opens, it will temporarily be used for circulation in the Cuenca-Azogues direction. The final traffic scheme returns only after both overpasses are complete.
MIT said it will communicate traffic changes when construction of the second overpass begins and will coordinate with the Municipality to reduce inconvenience for drivers. For now, the practical advice is to keep treating Monay as an active work zone, not a finished shortcut.
