Surprise April 30 Holiday Creates 4-Day Weekend

A Surprise 4-Day Weekend Lands in Late April
President Noboa announced a decree suspending the April 30 workday for public sector employees, effectively creating a 4-day holiday weekend when combined with May 1 Labor Day and the weekend.
Here's how the extended holiday stacks up:
- Thursday, April 30 — Suspended workday (declared holiday)
- Friday, May 1 — Labor Day (Día del Trabajo, permanent national holiday)
- Saturday, May 2 — Weekend
- Sunday, May 3 — Weekend
Four consecutive days off. In Ecuador, this is called a puente (bridge) — a long weekend created by joining a holiday to the regular weekend.
Why This Matters
Noboa's decree applies directly to public sector employees, which means government offices, courts, and public institutions will be closed. But in Ecuador, public sector holidays tend to become de facto national holidays because:
- Banks typically close or operate with reduced hours on public holidays
- Private companies often follow public sector closures to match schedules
- Schools usually close (though each institution makes its own decision)
- Service providers that depend on public offices grind to a halt
Historically, puentes like this one see the private sector following the public sector lead within 24-48 hours of the announcement.
What Will Be Closed
Definitely closed (public sector):
- Registro Civil
- Notarías (notaries)
- Municipal offices (cuenca.gob.ec)
- SRI offices
- Agencia Nacional de Tránsito
- IESS administrative offices
- Courts and prosecutors' offices
- Public schools and universities (typically)
Likely closed or limited hours:
- Banks (Banco Pichincha, Produbanco, Banco Guayaquil, etc.)
- Private schools (usually follow public school calendars)
- Medical specialists in private clinics (often take puentes)
- Professional services (lawyers, accountants, insurance agents)
Open but possibly busy:
- Supermarkets (Supermaxi, Coral, Gran Aki) — full hours, but crowded
- Restaurants and cafes
- Shopping malls (Mall del Río, Monay Shopping)
- Tourist attractions and museums
- Pharmacies (Fybeca, Pharmacys, Sana Sana)
Definitely open:
- Gas stations
- Hospitals and emergency services
- Taxis, Uber, InDrive
- Convenience stores
Travel Impact — Plan Now
Four-day weekends in Ecuador trigger massive internal travel. Here's what to expect:
Highway traffic will be heavy. The Cuenca-to-coast routes (both the Molleturo/Cajas route and the Girón/Pasaje route) will fill up on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning as people flee to the beach. Return traffic on Sunday evening will be brutal.
Hotel prices on the coast will spike. Salinas, Montañita, Ayampe, Puerto López, and other beach destinations will see dramatic price increases and limited availability. If you're thinking about going, book now.
Flights will fill up. Cuenca-Quito and Cuenca-Guayaquil flights will sell out or get pricey. Same for flights to Galápagos.
Hotels in Cuenca may fill with Ecuadorian visitors. Cuenca is a popular domestic tourism destination, especially from Guayaquil and the coast. Expect the historic center to be busier than usual with domestic tourists.
What This Means for Expats
- If you need any government paperwork done, do it before April 29. Everything closes for four days. If your cédula, visa, or driver's license needs renewal in early May, get ahead of it this week or next
- Banking — plan ahead. Make sure you have cash for the weekend. ATMs will be busy and can run out of bills during long holidays. Do any transfers or online payments before Wednesday, April 29
- Medical appointments — check now. If you have a specialist appointment scheduled for April 30 or May 1, confirm it's still on. Many doctors take the full puente
- If you're traveling, book immediately. Hotels on the coast are already being locked in by Ecuadorian families. Every day you wait, availability shrinks and prices rise
- If you're staying in Cuenca, embrace the quieter vibe. El Centro during a puente often has a pleasant, local-tourist energy. Restaurants are busy but not overwhelmed
- Consider a staycation alternative to the coast. Vilcabamba, Baños de Agua Santa, Cotopaxi area, Otavalo — all easier to reach from Cuenca and less saturated than beach destinations during puentes
- Pharmacies stay open — don't panic-stock medications. But if you take something essential daily, make sure you have enough for the long weekend
- Your Ecuadorian employees and contractors (housekeepers, gardeners, handymen) will likely want the puente off. Plan accordingly
- Gas up Wednesday night. Stations near the coastal highways can experience shortages during puente weekends
A 4-day weekend is a gift. It's also a logistics challenge. Handle the logistics now, then enjoy the time off.
