Cuenca's Week in Culture: Workshops, Theater, Open-Air Cinema (Mar 23-29)

This Week's Cultural Lineup
Cuenca's Municipality has published its cultural agenda for March 23-29, and there's a solid mix of activities happening across the city's cultural spaces. Whether you're into workshops, live theater, or just want to catch a movie under the stars, there's something on the calendar.
Here's what's happening and where.
Pawkar Raymi Activities
You'll notice Pawkar Raymi events scattered throughout the week's programming. If you're not familiar, Pawkar Raymi is the Festival of Flowering — one of the four major Andean/Kichwa celebrations tied to the agricultural calendar. It marks the blooming season and is traditionally celebrated around the spring equinox (which just passed on March 20).
In the Cuenca area, Pawkar Raymi is observed with community gatherings, traditional music and dance, ritual baths, offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth), and cultural workshops. It's deeply tied to indigenous Kañari and Kichwa traditions in the Azuay highlands.
For expats, Pawkar Raymi events are a fantastic window into the living indigenous culture that exists alongside (and long predates) Cuenca's colonial Spanish heritage. The events are public, free, and welcoming.
Workshops
Several workshops (talleres) are scheduled at cultural centers and libraries across the city. The municipality runs these through its network of cultural spaces, and they typically cover:
- Arts and crafts — painting, ceramics, traditional weaving
- Music — instrument lessons, traditional music appreciation
- Literary workshops — creative writing, reading groups
- Heritage crafts — including activities at the Municipal Museum of Paja Toquilla (the Panama hat museum on Calle Larga)
The Paja Toquilla museum workshops are particularly worth checking out. They offer hands-on sessions where you can learn the basics of straw hat weaving — the UNESCO-recognized craft that Cuenca is famous for. Even if you're not crafty, it's a fascinating experience.
Theater at Teatro Sucre
Teatro Sucre — Cuenca's beautiful municipal theater located on Calle Sucre near Parque Calderón — has performances on the schedule this week. Teatro Sucre regularly hosts drama, comedy, dance, and musical performances, often at very accessible prices ($3-8 is typical for municipal productions).
Performances are almost always in Spanish, but theater is one of those experiences where you can enjoy the production even if you don't catch every word. And it's a gorgeous venue — the restored colonial theater is worth visiting for the building alone.
Open-Air Cinema
One of the week's highlights is open-air cinema (cine al aire libre) — the municipality periodically sets up outdoor screenings in parks and public spaces. These are free, family-friendly, and a great way to spend an evening.
Bring a jacket — Cuenca evenings hover around 10-12°C (50-54°F) this time of year, and sitting outside for two hours gets chilly. A blanket to sit on isn't a bad idea either.
Municipal Libraries and Cultural Centers
Cuenca has a surprisingly robust network of municipal libraries and cultural centers (centros culturales) spread across the city and rural parishes. They host regular programming including:
- Reading clubs (clubes de lectura)
- Children's programs and storytelling
- Art exhibitions that rotate monthly
- Community meetings on local topics
The main municipal library is on Calle Larga, but there are smaller branches in neighborhoods throughout the city. These are free, public spaces — you can just walk in.
How to Get Details
The full schedule with specific times, locations, and descriptions is available on the Municipality of Cuenca's social media pages (search "Municipio de Cuenca" on Facebook or Instagram). They typically post the weekly agenda as a graphic with all events listed.
Most cultural events are free or very low cost (under $5). No reservations needed for most activities — just show up.
This week's agenda is a good example of why Cuenca's cultural scene punches above its weight for a city its size. Take advantage of it.
