Free Flu Shots Extended Through May 30 — Here's Where to Get One in Cuenca

The Campaign Got Extended
Good news if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet: Ecuador's Campaña Nacional Vacúnate has been extended through May 30, 2026 — originally it was supposed to wrap up in March.
The Health Ministry made the call because respiratory viruses are circulating at higher-than-normal levels this season. So far, 2.9 million doses have been administered nationwide, and Cuenca hit an impressive 92% coverage last year.
But if you're in the 8% who didn't get vaccinated — or if you're new to Cuenca and haven't navigated the system yet — here's everything you need to know.
Where to Get It
Flu shots are available free of charge at:
- Any of Ecuador's 1,900+ public health centers (centros de salud)
- Public hospitals (Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga / IESS hospital, Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso)
- IESS facilities — if you're an IESS member, your regular clinic has them
- Subcentros de salud in neighborhoods across Cuenca
No appointment needed. Just walk in during regular hours (typically 8 AM - 5 PM, Monday-Friday) and ask for the vacuna contra la influenza.
Who Should Get It
The Ministry prioritizes:
- Adults 65+ — highest risk group
- Children 6 months to 5 years
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, respiratory issues)
- Healthcare workers
But the vaccine is available to everyone — you don't need to be in a priority group. If you want one, you can get one.
What You Need to Bring
- Your cédula (Ecuadorian ID) or passport
- Your IESS card if going to an IESS facility (not strictly required, but speeds things up)
- That's it. No referral, no prescription, no paperwork
Why This Matters for Expats
A few things worth knowing:
- It's genuinely free — no copay, no hidden charges, no "but you need to buy the vaccine at the pharmacy first." Walk in, roll up your sleeve, walk out
- IESS members: This is separate from your regular appointments. You don't need to book through the IESS app or wait for an assigned date
- The rainy season is peak flu season in Cuenca — March through May is when respiratory illness spikes in the highlands. Getting vaccinated now still gives you protection for the tail end of the season
- Ecuador's flu vaccine is the same WHO-recommended formulation used in the U.S. and Europe — this isn't a different or inferior product
The Closest Health Centers for Most Expats
If you live in popular expat areas:
- El Centro / El Vergel: Centro de Salud #1 (Calle Benigno Malo)
- Yanuncay: Centro de Salud Yanuncay
- Misicata / Racar: Centro de Salud Racar
- Totoracocha: Centro de Salud Totoracocha
- Anywhere: The IESS Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga on Avenida Rayoloma
Or just walk into the nearest one. They all have the vaccine.
