Cuenca’s Basic Basket Is Still Ecuador’s Most Expensive

Cuenca keeps wearing the expensive-city crown, at least by Ecuador’s official basic-basket measure.
The city’s Canasta Familiar Básica reached $876.71 in June 2026, the highest value Cuenca recorded during the first half of the year. The national basic basket was $824.85, up $3.38 from $821.47 in May.
Where Prices Moved
Ecuador’s annual inflation reached 1.65% in June 2026, while monthly inflation was 0.79%. The biggest monthly increases came from:
- Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels: 0.36%
- Transport: 0.28%
- Recreation and culture: 0.06%
That lines up with what many residents feel on the ground: Cuenca can still be affordable compared with North America, but the gap between ‘cheap Ecuador’ and actual monthly living costs is not as wide as it looks from YouTube.
Cuenca’s First-Half Pattern
Cuenca’s basket started the year at $864.65 in January, rose to $869.98 in February, hit $876.38 in March, dipped to $873.14 in April and $871.35 in May, then climbed again to $876.71 in June.
The national statistics office tracks 359 products in nine cities: Quito, Guayaquil, Manta, Machala, Loja, Esmeraldas, Ambato, Cuenca, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.
What This Means Locally
For expats, the takeaway is simple: Cuenca may still be one of Ecuador’s easiest cities to live in, but it is not automatically the cheapest. If your budget is tight, the neighborhood you choose, your transportation habits, and your utility setup matter a lot more than the headline cost-of-living pitch.
