Free Workshops All Month: Learn Guitar, Weave Panama Hats, or Try Your Hand at Macramé

Your Tax Dollars at Work (And for Once, It's Great)
The Municipality of Cuenca, through its General Directorate of Culture, Recreation and Knowledge, is running free workshops at municipal cultural centers throughout March. These aren't flimsy one-offs — some run daily for nearly a month.
Whether you want to learn guitar, try the traditional craft of weaving toquilla straw (the material behind the famous "Panama hat" — which is actually Ecuadorian), or pick up a paintbrush, there's something here.
The Full Workshop Schedule

How to Register
For most workshops, you register by emailing the coordinator listed above. Write in Spanish if you can (even basic Spanish works — "Quiero inscribirme en el taller de guitarra" will do). Include your name, phone number, and which workshop you're interested in.
Tips:
- Spots may be limited, so email early
- Workshops are conducted in Spanish — but arts and crafts workshops tend to be hands-on enough that language isn't a major barrier
- Bring your own materials if you have them, but the municipal centers typically provide basics
- All workshops are completely free
Why This Is Worth Your Time
Cuenca's municipal cultural centers are scattered across neighborhoods that most expats never visit — and that's part of the appeal. These workshops put you in rooms with Cuencanos of all ages, doing something creative together. It's one of the best ways to connect with the city beyond the expat bubble.
And seriously: learning to weave a toquilla straw hat in the city where they're actually made? That's a Cuenca experience you won't get anywhere else.
