José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital Reports More Than $4 Million In New Equipment

Cuenca's main IESS specialty hospital is getting a visible equipment push.
On July 13, 2026, Bernardo Cordovez, president of the IESS Board of Directors, toured the Hospital de Especialidades José Carrasco Arteaga to follow up on acquisitions made at the Cuenca medical center.
What Was Reported
During the first half of 2026, the hospital reported an investment of more than $4 million to expand specialized studies and improve diagnostic precision.
The equipment list includes specialized cardiology devices, a surgical microscope for neurosurgery, two high-tech ultrasound machines, a high-field magnetic resonance unit, digital radiology equipment, and a portable X-ray unit.
Of the total investment, $1.9 million went to 98 reagents with 15 months of coverage for the Clinical Pathology Unit.
What Patients May Notice
The hospital also reported delivery of 22 prostheses for people with upper- and lower-limb amputations, and cataract surgeries have resumed with new specialized equipment.
Planned additions include a hemodialysis unit with operating capacity for 72 patients, 100 new hospital beds, improvements to the physical-rehabilitation pool, and startup of magnetic-resonance and tomography equipment.
For IESS affiliates, retirees, and beneficiaries in Cuenca and the wider region, this is worth watching because José Carrasco Arteaga is a third-level hospital serving the south of the country.
