Mall del Alto Opens Thursday - Expect Traffic Controls Around the Autopista

A new mall opening is about to test traffic around one of Cuenca's busiest corridors.
El Mercurio reports that Mall del Alto is expected to open on Thursday, May 21, 2026, and that the city is preparing a mobility plan to reduce the traffic impact around the area.
What The City Plans
Pablo Carvallo, from the Municipality of Cuenca's Mobility Directorate, said there is concern about the high vehicle flow expected from Thursday on the autopista.
The plan includes civil traffic agents and cones at the mall exit. El Mercurio reports that the agents will work to clear roads, while cones will separate the entrance and exit of the shopping center.
The city also expects to keep controls active during the 24 de Mayo holiday period.
Bus Access
For people using public transport, El Mercurio lists bus lines 4, 13B, 11 and 7 as routes that reach the new shopping center.
The report also says the new pedestrian crossing connecting the two shopping centers will be enabled.
If you can avoid the area on opening day, that may be the calmer choice. If you are going, bus access may be easier than trying to improvise parking during the first rush.
