5G Is Live in Cuenca — And the Speeds Are Insane

5G Has Arrived in Cuenca
If you've been dealing with sluggish internet in Cuenca — buffering video calls, painfully slow uploads, that spinning wheel of death during Zoom meetings — there's finally some good news.
CNT EP (Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones), Ecuador's state-run telecom company, activated 5G service in Cuenca on February 5, 2026. It makes Cuenca one of the first cities in Ecuador to get 5G coverage, alongside Quito and Guayaquil.
The numbers being reported: up to 1.4 gigabits per second. That's roughly 30 times faster than 4G.
Where Does It Work?
CNT has activated six 5G radio base stations in Cuenca. The initial coverage areas include:
- Clínica La Paz area
- San Blas (historic center)
- Miraflores neighborhood
- Terminal Terrestre (bus terminal)
- Mariscal La Mar Airport
- Huayna Cápac Avenue
- Much of the Historic Center
If you live or work in any of these areas and have a 5G-capable phone, you can start using the network now.
What Speeds Are People Getting?
CNT's initial tests showed:
| Metric | Speed |
|---|---|
| Peak download | 1.4 Gbps |
| Comparison to 4G | ~30x faster |
| Latency | Significantly reduced |
To put that in perspective: downloading a full HD movie at 1.4 Gbps would take about 3 seconds. A Zoom call typically needs about 3-5 Mbps — 5G gives you roughly 300 times that.
Real-world speeds will vary depending on your location, device, network congestion, and how close you are to a base station. But even a fraction of the theoretical maximum is a massive improvement over current 4G service.
What You Need
To use 5G in Cuenca, you need:
- A 5G-capable phone — iPhone 12 or newer, Samsung Galaxy S21 or newer, most flagship Android phones from 2021+
- A CNT mobile plan — you'll need to be a CNT subscriber (or switch to one)
- Be within coverage — one of the six coverage zones listed above
If you're using Claro or Movistar, you're out of luck for now — CNT is the only carrier with 5G active in Cuenca. However, both competitors are expected to follow with their own 5G rollouts in 2026-2027.
What About Home Internet?
This initial rollout is mobile 5G — meaning it's for phones and mobile hotspots, not home broadband (yet). CNT hasn't announced fixed wireless 5G for home internet in Cuenca, though that's a logical next step.
For now, home internet in Cuenca still runs on fiber optic (if you're lucky), DSL, or 4G home routers. Fiber from CNT or Netlife remains the fastest option for home use, with plans up to 300 Mbps.
Why This Matters for Remote Workers
A huge percentage of Cuenca's expat community works remotely — freelancers, consultants, retirees managing investments, digital nomads. Internet speed and reliability directly affect quality of life.
5G as a backup connection is a game-changer. Even if your home fiber is solid, having a 5G-capable phone means you can:
- Hotspot from your phone during fiber outages (and there are outages)
- Work from cafés and co-working spaces in the coverage zone without worrying about Wi-Fi quality
- Take video calls from anywhere in the covered areas with confidence
For the digital nomad crowd especially, Cuenca just became significantly more competitive with cities like Medellín, Lisbon, and Chiang Mai on the connectivity front.
The Bigger Picture
CNT's national rollout plan targets mid-2026 for broader coverage, with Manta and Ambato next on the list after Cuenca. The company plans 422 5G base stations nationally by end of year.
Ecuador is a latecomer to 5G compared to neighbors like Colombia and Chile, but CNT is moving aggressively. For Cuenca specifically, six stations is a start — but if the rollout follows the pattern of other Latin American cities, expect coverage to expand significantly through the rest of 2026.
Bottom Line
Is 5G going to change your life tomorrow? Probably not — the coverage area is still limited and you need a CNT plan. But it's a meaningful signal that Cuenca's tech infrastructure is catching up to the city's growing reputation as a remote-work destination.
If you're a CNT subscriber with a 5G phone and you live or work near the historic center, Miraflores, or the airport — check your signal. You might already be on 5G without realizing it.
