Ochoa Leon Neighbors Are Still Using a Bridge Officials Closed for Collapse Risk

A bridge problem in Ochoa Leon has become a daily mobility headache and a safety concern.
El Mercurio reports that the area's vehicle bridge has faced a high collapse risk, while a new pedestrian bridge is close to opening nearby.
What Changed
The vehicle bridge has been closed since March 23 because of structural damage.
On March 27, the Municipality of Cuenca prohibited vehicle traffic over the cement bridge because of the risk of collapse from large cracks in its bases.
Authorities placed concrete blocks and later material moved by dump trucks to block the crossing. El Mercurio reports that residents removed part of the blockages, and vehicle traffic currently continues.
Who Is Affected
More than 100 families live with the problem, according to El Mercurio.
Residents say alternate routes take more time and are in bad condition.
One nearby resident told the newspaper that the Machangara River rises considerably during winter and warned that a bridge collapse could block the river channel and create a larger problem.
New Pedestrian Bridge
El Mercurio reports that a new wooden pedestrian bridge is being built near the old crossing site.
The new structure will sit on cement, iron and marble bases and include LED lighting.
For expats who live in or pass through north-side rural neighborhoods, the practical takeaway is simple: if locals say a bridge is risky, do not treat it like a shortcut. Wait for official repair or replacement clarity.
