Universidad de Cuenca Starts Its New Semester Today — Expect More Traffic on 12 de Abril

What's Happening
Starting today (March 19), the Universidad de Cuenca kicks off its March-August 2026 academic period. That means roughly 18,000 students are back on campus — and back on the roads, buses, and sidewalks of central Cuenca.
Where You'll Feel It
The main campus sits along Avenida 12 de Abril — one of Cuenca's busiest corridors, running parallel to the Tomebamba River between El Vergel and Feria Libre. If you live, work, or commute anywhere near this stretch, you already know what university semesters mean:
- Heavier traffic on Av. 12 de Abril, especially between 7-9 AM and 12-2 PM
- More crowded buses on routes that pass the campus (particularly the ones running along 12 de Abril and the Autopista)
- Busier cafés and restaurants in the university area — places like the restaurants along Calle Larga near the Puente Roto, and the food court area near the campus
- More pedestrian activity on the Barranco walkway and bridges crossing the Tomebamba
Practical Tips
If you drive:
- Avoid Av. 12 de Abril between 7-9 AM and 12-2 PM if you can
- The tram runs parallel and is a good alternative for getting across the city during peak hours
- Consider using Ordóñez Lasso or Av. Solano as alternate routes
If you take the bus:
- Expect fuller buses during morning and lunchtime hours
- The tram's Universidad stop drops you right at the campus if you're headed that way
If you eat near campus:
- Lunchtime spots near the university get packed from about 12:30-1:30 PM
- This is actually a good time to explore the area's restaurants — the student economy supports a lot of affordable, good food options along 12 de Abril and in the El Vergel neighborhood
What's New This Semester
The university hasn't announced any major campus changes for this period. However, Cuenca itself has changed since the last semester ended:
- The rainy season is at its peak — students walking along the Barranco should be cautious near the river
- The Monay-IESS interchange construction affects traffic patterns on the east side
- The tram continues to operate and is an increasingly popular option for students
Why This Matters Beyond Traffic
The Universidad de Cuenca is the city's largest university and one of Ecuador's oldest (founded 1867). When it's in session, the entire central-south part of the city has a different energy — more vibrant, more crowded, more alive. Restaurants are busier, cultural events pick up, and the Barranco walkway fills with students between classes.
For expats who moved to Cuenca partly for its culture and energy, semester time is actually when the city is at its best. Yes, there's more traffic. But there's also more of everything else.
