The University of Cuenca's Agronomy Program Turns 47

Turning 47
The Universidad de Cuenca's Agronomy program hit a milestone this week: 47 years since it launched. Rector Rodrigo Mendieta was at the commemorative event on April 10, 2026 (source).
Per El Mercurio: "La carrera inició en 1979 con 39 estudiantes y, con el paso de los años, se ha posicionado" — the program began in 1979 with just 39 students and has since grown into one of the university's established faculties.
Why This Matters Locally
Ecuador's Austro region — the highlands around Cuenca — is an agricultural zone at its core. Family farms, dairy, potatoes, corn, and specialty Andean crops all run on knowledge that gets passed down and formally trained. The University of Cuenca's agronomy carrera is one of the places where that training actually happens.
When you see agronomists working on Azuay provincial projects or Cuenca municipal food programs, there's a reasonable chance they passed through this program.
What This Means for You
- Universidad de Cuenca is a quiet anchor of the local economy. It's public, it's large, and its graduates populate the municipal and provincial agencies you interact with as a resident.
- Agricultural knowledge here runs through local institutions. If you've been curious about where the farmers you meet at ferias get their training, the U. of Cuenca is part of the answer.
- The Austro's food system is surprisingly local. Most of what shows up at Feria Libre traveled a short distance from the farm. Programs like agronomy are part of why that supply chain exists at all.
