Grab an Umbrella AND Sunscreen — Rain and Extreme UV Through Wednesday

The Forecast
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMHI) issued Alert #30 for this week. Two things to watch:
Rain: Precipitation concentrated in the interior coastal region and the western mountain foothills, with greater intensity expected in the Amazon and Sierra sectors. That includes us.
UV radiation: Very high levels across most of Ecuador's territory. The kind of UV that burns in 15 minutes if you're not covered.
This alert runs through Wednesday, April 29.
Temperature Range
For the Sierra (Cuenca's region):
- Low: 7°C (45°F) — morning and overnight
- High: 23°C (73°F) — midday
That's classic Cuenca weather: cool mornings, warm midday sun, afternoon rain possible.
What This Means for You
The Cuenca forecast paradox: you need both rain gear and sun protection, sometimes in the same day.
Practical tips for this week:
- Morning: Layer up. 7°C at 6 AM is genuinely cold, especially if you're walking
- Midday: UV is extreme. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses — even if it looks overcast. UV penetrates cloud cover here at altitude
- Afternoon: Carry an umbrella or light rain jacket. Sierra rain typically hits between 2-5 PM
- Driving: If you're heading to the coast via Molleturo or Cajas, expect reduced visibility in the foothills. Go slow
- Laundry: Don't hang clothes out expecting them to dry all day. The window is 9 AM to 1 PM
This pattern continues through Wednesday at minimum.
