Centrosur Warns About Fake Electric Workers in Cuenca

Cuenca residents should be careful with anyone showing up at the door claiming to be from Centrosur.
The electric distributor for Azuay, Canar and Morona Santiago issued a public warning on June 4 after identifying people who were pretending to be company workers and carrying out supposed electricity-consumption readings in different parts of Cuenca.
Centrosur says those people do not belong to the company and are not authorized to act on its behalf.
What To Check
Real Centrosur personnel should have:
- An institutional uniform
- Official identification
- Visible ID when arriving at a home
If something feels off, do not let the person inside just because they mention a utility reading.
What This Means For Expats
This is exactly the kind of local scam that can catch foreigners because utility visits feel normal and the conversation may happen quickly in Spanish.
If someone comes to your gate or apartment building claiming to be from Centrosur, ask to see ID before opening anything. If you live in a building, check with the administrator or guard before allowing access.
Centrosur is asking residents to report suspicious activity to the proper authorities.
